The bark from this herb is used as a stimulant, astringent, diaphoretic and an ingredient of many composite remedies for a range of ailments especially coughs and colds. Its main constituents are triterpenes including taraxerol and taraxerone and flavonoids such as myricitrin.

It contains an antibiotic chemical, myricitrin, which is bactericidal and helps reduce fever.
