With South African habitat, the Buchu has small, greenish-yellow leaves with a short petiole and visible glands.
The leaves can be used medicinally as a diuretic, diaphoretic and stimulant. The diuretic activity is attributed to the diosphenol content. Buchu is also used particularly as a urinary antiseptic, however no in vitro effect against urinary pathogens and only weak activity against bacvteria have been observed. For inflammation of the bladder it is taken as an infusion.
