FENNEL

Also known as sweet fennel, because of its sweet flavour and aroma, this culinary and medicinal herb is indigenious to the Mediterranean but is now widely cultivated around the world.

The volatile oil (consisting mainly of anethole) from the fruit of Fennel is used. The other main component of the oil is fenchone. It is particularly used to treat flatulence and colic in infants. The volatile oil is spasmolytic and carminative. On account of these carminative properties; Fennel is chiefly used medicinally with purgatives to allay their side effects. Lab studies have also shown it aids liver regeneration.
