There are two different varieties of Horehound, black and white. Both herbs are used to eliminate severe mucus congestion of the respiratory passages and can rapidly loosen the impacted and accumulated phlegm in the lining of the lungs, throat and sinuses. It is also effective in relieving headache induced by sinus infection. The phenylpropanoids found in black Horehound are antibacterial, antioxidant and sedative.
A major component of white Horehound is marrubiin which is considered to be responsible for the expectorant activity as well as most of the other therapeutic effects. Marrubiin does not exist in the fresh plant but is formed from premarrubiin during processing.
Found in Potter’s Cough Remover and Potter’s Chest Mixture.
