SCULLCAP

Scullcap can refer to two herbs: American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) and Chinese skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis). Scullcap remedies use the root of the Chinese variety and the leaves of the American variety. Both forms of skullcap are used to treat different conditions and are not interchangeable.

Both American scullcap and Chinese scullcap can increase the effect of drugs that have a sedating effect.

American scullcap is used as a sedative, nervine, antispasmodic, and anticonvulsant. It is highly regarded for hysteria, nervous tension and as an antispasmodic. Most of the studies done on skullcap have examined Chinese scullcap. Chinese scullcap has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-allergic properties.
