This is a gentle and effective herb for irritated states of the mucous membranes of the chest, urinary tract, stomach and intestines.
Slippery Elm contains mucilages which becomes a slick gel when mixed with water. This coats and soothes the mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines. It also contains antioxidants that help relieve inflammatory bowel conditions. Other constituents are sterols, tannins, oleic and palmitic acids. Slippery Elm also causes reflux stimulation of nerve endings in the gastrointestinal tract leading to increased mucus secretion. The increased mucus production may protect the gastrointestinal tract against ulcers and excess acidity.
Slippery Elm can also be used externally as a poultice or emollient for wounds, burns, boils, psoriasis, and other skin conditions where it soothes and draws out infection.
